What changed in Shopify POS in 2026 for counter stores

Updated · 7 min read
By Invenire Studios, makers of Countermade

The short answer

In 2026, Shopify rebuilt the POS cart in February, added pickup in March and local delivery in September, and turned on automatic staff credit for eligible shops on July 6. Since April 1, 2026, drafts left unedited for a year are deleted. POS Pro carts autosave and share across devices, but delete after 24 hours by default. Since August 11, gift receipts on the new receipt editor list no items. The code editor ends January 1, 2027.

Which 2026 Shopify POS changes affect counter orders?

Ten 2026 changes affect counter orders: the rebuilt cart (February), pickup orders (March), draft deletion after a year (April), automatic staff credit (July), recent carts (July), committed draft stock (August), the new receipt editor (August), the phone cart button (September), local delivery (September) and order tiles (October). The table adds the POS version, POS Pro need and next step.

Where did the More actions items go in Shopify POS 11?

POS 11.0 (February 18, 2026) left only whole-cart actions under More actions. The rest moved to the smart grid or into the cart, which stays visible through checkout. On phones, POS 11.15 replaced the Cart tab with a persistent cart button. Check the smart grid tiles your staff use, and show phone users the new cart button.

Why did a saved cart disappear from Recent carts in Shopify POS?

Since July 27, 2026 (POS 11.11, POS Pro), carts save themselves as recent carts, which hold no stock and are deleted after 24 hours by default, and staff with the Manage recent carts permission can pick one up on another POS device in the same store. For anything that waits past today, make it a draft order. The recent carts vs draft orders guide covers the Delete after setting and why a cart disappears.

Can customers pay now and pick up later in Shopify POS?

Since POS 11.3 (March 30, 2026), staff can create a pickup order at the counter: the customer pays now, and the order is held until they collect it. It needs POS Pro and the Pickup in store fulfillment method turned on.

Staff use the Pickup all items tile and can print a pickup slip to keep with the order.

The pickup orders guide covers setup. If the customer pays later, use a draft order instead.

Can I take a local delivery order in Shopify POS?

Since September 28, 2026, POS Pro stores can take local delivery orders at the counter. You need Shopify POS 11.16 or later and local delivery set up for the location in your Shopify admin. At checkout, staff add the customer’s address and pick Local delivery under Shipping.

Set it up per location with the local delivery orders guide.

Why do Shopify gift receipts no longer show line items?

On Shopify’s new receipt editor, released August 11, 2026, gift receipts no longer show line items, so you can print several at once. This is a Shopify change, not a fault with your printer or template. The gift receipts without prices guide covers the options. To check what the new editor prints, see where order notes print.

If you need a price-free list for an order still being made, Prep Ticket, from Countermade, prints one from the draft order in Shopify POS: item names, quantities, customer and notes, with no prices. See printing an order before the customer pays.

When does the Shopify POS receipt code editor end?

On January 1, 2027, or sooner if you switch to the visual editor. Switching can’t be undone. Most Liquid customizations migrate automatically; move any that don’t by hand. Shops still on Liquid on January 1, 2027 are moved to the new format automatically.

Before you switch, save a copy of your template code and print a test of each receipt type you use. More in the receipt code editor ending in 2027.

Who gets credit for a sale in Shopify POS now?

The staff member who’s pinned in, if automatic attribution is on. POS 11.9 brought automatic attribution, and from July 6, 2026, Shopify turned it on for eligible shops that hadn’t customized their attribution settings. By default, attribution no longer shows on each line item. To credit someone else, tap the line item and select Attribute staff.

Attribution settings live in the POS sales channel. Carts sent by email with Send cart can’t track staff signed in under PIN.

See the staff attribution guide.

What else changed for draft orders in 2026?

Since April 1, 2026, Shopify deletes draft orders created on or after April 1, 2025 after a year with no edits, and any edit resets that timer. Reserved draft stock sits in the Committed inventory state, and other customers can’t buy it. Since August 5, 2026, inventory adjustment reports and apps that read Shopify’s inventory data show it as committed, not reserved, with a one-time correction entry.

Spring ‘26 also added custom line item prices and discounts on drafts (useful for one-off jobs and custom sales). See why Shopify deletes drafts after a year and draft orders in Shopify POS.

No. Pay by link (POS 10.13, October 2025) lets an in-store customer pay with a local method such as iDEAL, Klarna or Twint on their own phone. To send a link the customer pays later, Shopify’s own options include emailing a draft order invoice, emailing the cart with Send cart (POS Pro), or a Quick Sale payment link in the Shopify app (not POS).

In POS, email a draft from the Order icon > Drafts > ⋮ > Email to customer. Quick Sale has offered payment links since December 10, 2025, with shipping since March 16, 2026. Pay Link, from Countermade, makes that link from an order built in Shopify POS.

What other Shopify POS changes came in 2026?

Several more 2026 releases change everyday register work, not how counter orders are taken or held. They cover returns, discounts, offline checkout, online carts, receipts and smart grid tiles. For every change by version, see Shopify’s retail release roundup.

  • Spring ‘26 Edition: returns and exchanges in one cart, keyboard shortcuts, in-store only discounts, offline checkout turned on by device.
  • POS 11.14 (September 3): staff with View abandoned checkouts see a known customer’s abandoned online checkout.
  • October 12: smart grid tile suggestions, based on the products and discounts your staff use most.
  • POS 11.17 (October 13): in-store receipts sent to Shop for Shop Pay customers, after a one-time consent.

Countermade, the Shopify POS apps from Invenire Studios, has one for each job, both for Shopify POS Pro. Prep Ticket prints a price-free list of an order’s items from a draft order, which gift receipts no longer give you. Pay Link covers the counter order the customer pays for later: staff build it in Shopify POS and Pay Link turns it into a link to Shopify’s secure checkout.

Prep Ticket prints through the iPad’s print dialog (AirPrint) to a printer the iPad can reach, from drafts made in POS or the Shopify admin.

Pay Link works from the POS cart. Before anything is sent, staff see the total up front, with a note when checkout will add shipping. A double tap makes one link, not two, and staff can see whether it’s been paid. The customer pays the full amount, and staff never see or type card details.

For Pay Link orders, turn on Pickup in store for the location in your Shopify admin so the customer can choose pickup instead of shipping at checkout.

Common questions

Why don’t I see the new Shopify POS features?
Update the POS app on every iPad and phone: pickup orders need POS 11.3, cart sharing 11.11, the phone cart button 11.15 and local delivery 11.16. Pickup, recent carts and local delivery also need a POS Pro location.
Which 2026 Shopify POS changes need POS Pro?
Shopify names POS Pro for pickup orders, recent carts and cart sharing, and local delivery orders. Draft orders in POS and Send cart also need POS Pro.
Are staff credited automatically in Shopify POS?
If automatic attribution is on. From July 6, 2026, Shopify turned it on for eligible shops that hadn’t customized their attribution settings, so sales go to the staff member who’s pinned in. To credit someone else, tap the line item and choose Attribute staff.
Which POS version do I need for pickup orders?
Shopify POS 11.3 or later, on a POS Pro location with the Pickup in store fulfillment method turned on. To change the pickup location in the cart, the device needs POS 11.8 or later.
