Shopify POS staff attribution: who gets credit, and how to fix it

The short answer

A Shopify POS Pro sale is credited to the staff member you add to it. Since July 6, 2026, POS auto-credits whoever is pinned in at eligible stores that hadn’t customized their settings. Away from the register, Shopify documents credit for one route: Send cart. The customer pays online, and the sale counts for the POS channel and your store. It’s credited to the sending rep if they signed in with email, not a PIN.

How does Shopify POS decide which staff member gets credit for a sale?

The Add staff to sale setting controls how credit is given. Turn on Required to make staff part of every sale, then choose a Selection. Manual prompts staff to pick items and a staff member at checkout, so credit can cover the whole sale or single items. Automatic credits whoever is working the register; POS doesn’t show that credit to the signed-in staff member, only changes to it.

To change it in your Shopify admin:

  1. Go to Sales channels > Point of Sale.
  2. In Customize the in-store experience, click Edit Point of Sale.
  3. Click the settings icon in the POS editor’s menu bar, then Add staff to sale.
  4. Turn on Required, then set Selection to Automatic (credit whoever is at the register) or Manual, and click Save.

Adding staff to sales works only at locations on POS Pro; see how POS Lite and Pro differ for counter orders.

What changed in Shopify POS staff attribution in July 2026?

In its June 22, 2026 changelog for POS v11.9, Shopify announced that, from July 6, POS turns on automatic attribution for eligible stores that hadn’t customized their attribution settings, so sales go to whoever is pinned in without anyone tapping Add staff.

The same release took credit off each line item by default. To see or change it, tap the line item and select Attribute staff in the cart tray.

Automatic credit goes to whoever is pinned in, so have each person pin in as themselves. See other 2026 POS changes.

How do I credit a different staff member, or split credit across items?

Credit single items with Attribute staff in the cart tray, or the whole sale with the Add staff to sale tile on the Smart Grid. Crediting by item lets two people share a sale: one rep sells a sofa and a colleague the cushions.

Credit items from the cart

  1. In the POS cart, tap the items you want to credit, or tap Select all.
  2. Tap Attribute staff in the cart tray. Shopify’s help page still calls this button Add staff.
  3. Search for and select the staff member.

Credit the whole sale from the Smart Grid

  1. Tap Add staff to sale (the tile can read Edit staff on sale).
  2. Select the staff member, then tap Save.

If Add staff to sale is set to Required, you can’t remove staff from an item.

Which remote orders keep store and staff credit in Shopify POS?

The table compares each way a customer can pay for an order your team took. Send cart sales carry documented channel, store and staff credit. For a draft paid by its link, Shopify’s help documents only the channel (Draft Orders), and for a Quick Sale payment link none of the three.

Route Where the customer pays Sales channel Store (location) credit Staff credit
Sale at the register In store A sale made at a POS location The location where it’s sold Whoever you add, or whoever is pinned in when Selection is Automatic
Send cart (Email cart) Online checkout, from the email Point of Sale The retail location The staff member signed in with their email when it’s sent; not PIN sign-ins
Draft order saved in POS or made in the admin, paid by its link or invoice Online checkout Draft Orders (Shopify’s sales report) Not documented Not documented. The draft’s timeline shows who created it
Quick Sale payment link (Shopify app) Online checkout, from the payment link Not documented Not documented Not documented

Does Send cart credit the staff member who sent it?

Yes, when the rep is signed in to Shopify POS with their email at the moment the cart is sent. Once the customer pays, the sale counts in Sales by channel and Retail sales by Point of Sale location, and in both staff reports: POS staff sales total and POS total sales by staff member.

Shopify calls the feature Email cart. It needs POS Pro, goes to the customer by email, and the customer must pay for the entire order.

  1. Log the POS app in with your own Shopify account email and password, not just your PIN at the lock screen.
  2. On the cart, tap More actions (⋯), then Send cart.
  3. Enter the customer’s email, add an optional message, and tap Send.
The cart’s More actions (⋯) menu in Shopify POS, with Create draft order and Send cart outlined.

A recent cart finished at the register is credited at checkout; see recent carts vs draft orders.

If you’ve read a 2022 forum thread where a merchant reported Send cart crediting the owner, it predates Shopify’s October 31, 2023 attribution change.

“Email carts can’t track staff signed in under PIN”: what does it mean?

Shopify credits a Send cart (Email cart) sale to the staff member signed in to POS with their email when the cart is sent. Staff signed in under only their 4 to 6 digit PIN can’t be credited that way, so the sale isn’t tracked to them. That includes POS app-only staff, who don’t need an email address.

Once a device is logged in, POS-only staff use their PIN to log in and out at the lock screen. Before sending a cart, the rep logs the app in with their own email and password. A rep with only a PIN can have a colleague signed in with their email send it, then fix the credit on the paid order.

Shopify doesn’t say. A draft paid by its link or invoice becomes an order marked Paid, and Shopify’s sales report lists it under Draft Orders, but no help page mentions store or staff credit. If credit matters, use Send cart, which Shopify documents as credited to the POS channel, the store and the rep.

The draft’s timeline records who created it and who last updated it. The POS Orders list shows only POS orders at your signed-in location by default; set the Sale type filter to Online to see orders that weren’t sold at the register (finding paid link orders).

See saving and emailing drafts in Shopify POS and how to text a draft’s checkout link.

How do I fix staff credit on an order that’s already paid?

Open the completed order in Shopify POS and edit its Staff section. You choose which items each person is credited for, so you can split credit here too. Whoever makes the change needs the “Manage sales attribution for orders” permission set to Allowed.

  1. In Shopify POS, tap the order icon and open the order.
  2. In the Staff section, tap Add staff, or Edit if someone is already credited.
  3. On the Select items screen, select the items, tap Add staff, and select the staff member.

Credited items then show Sold by and the staff member’s name.

Which report should I use for staff commission?

Use POS total sales by staff member for commission: it counts the line items each person was credited with at checkout. POS staff sales total shows who processed the sale at the register instead, so the two totals can disagree. Both are retail sales reports, which include only sales made at a POS location.

Is there another way to send a phone order from the POS cart?

Shopify’s own routes are Send cart, which emails the customer a checkout link from the POS cart, and a draft order’s checkout link. Compare them in Shopify POS payment link options. Pay Link, from Countermade (the Shopify POS apps from Invenire Studios), turns the POS cart into a link the customer pays on Shopify’s own secure checkout.

The rep builds the phone order in the cart and sees the total up front, with a note when checkout will add shipping. A double tap makes one link, not two. Staff never see or type card details, and they can see whether the link has been paid.

Pay Link needs Shopify POS Pro. Checkout asks for a delivery address; turn on local pickup so customers collecting in store can choose it. See Pay Link and the full phone-order workflow.

Common questions

Does Shopify POS credit staff automatically?
Yes, when Add staff to sale is Required with Selection set to Automatic: Shopify POS credits the staff member pinned in at the register. Shopify turned this on by default from July 6, 2026 at eligible stores that hadn’t customized their attribution settings; stores with their own settings keep them. Otherwise staff add credit by hand at checkout.
Why wasn’t an emailed cart credited to the staff member who sent it?
Shopify credits an Email cart sale to the staff member signed in to POS with their email when the cart is sent, and says Email carts can’t track staff signed in under a PIN. If a rep needs credit, have them log the POS app in with their own email and password, not just a PIN, before tapping Send cart.
Do Send cart sales show in POS reports?
Send cart (Email cart) sales appear in four Shopify reports: Sales by channel, Retail sales by Point of Sale location, POS staff sales total and POS total sales by staff member. Shopify attributes the sale to the POS channel and the retail location, and credits the staff member who sent the cart.
Can I change who’s credited after the customer has paid?
Yes. In Shopify POS, open the order, go to the Staff section and tap Add staff, or Edit if someone is already credited. You need the Manage sales attribution for orders permission set to Allowed.
Which report shows sales by staff for commission?
POS total sales by staff member shows sales by the staff credited with line items at checkout, so use it for commission. POS staff sales total counts who processed the sale at the register, so the two totals can differ.
