Shopify POS receipt code editor ends January 1, 2027: what to do

The short answer

Shopify is retiring the receipt code editor. Shops with Liquid receipt templates have until January 1, 2027 to move to the visual editor, after which Shopify migrates them automatically. Your Liquid template keeps printing until you switch, but clicking Activate visual editor can’t be undone. Before you switch, update every device to POS 11.10 or later, save your Liquid, preview every receipt and rebuild what’s flagged.

What happens to my Shopify POS receipt code editor on January 1, 2027?

On January 1, 2027, Shopify moves any shop still on a Liquid receipt template to the visual editor automatically. Until then the code editor stays and you choose when to switch. Once you activate the visual editor, Shopify removes the code editor for good.

Shopify’s changelog post on the enhanced printed receipt editor, dated August 11, 2026, sets out the deadline. Shopify’s code editor help page adds that no new shops or locations can be added to the code editor, its templates no longer receive updates, and receipt properties added after June 1, 2026 are only available in the visual editor.

Only POS Pro locations can use the code editor, and only from the Shopify admin on desktop. The visual editor is available on all Shopify POS subscription plans. For the other POS changes this year, see Shopify POS updates in 2026.

Which Shopify POS Liquid receipt edits carry over to the visual editor?

Simple customizations, such as text blocks, migrate automatically. Anything Shopify can’t convert reliably is flagged for you to rebuild, using its built-in options or a custom Liquid block in the header or footer. Header and footer content can come back. Line items have settings for SKU, Product metafields and Line item tax, but the item list’s layout and styling can’t come back.

Here is where common Liquid edits now live, using the labels from Shopify’s customization options page:

What your Liquid did Where it goes now
Logo, header or footer text, thank-you note Logo; Text block; Thank-you message
Return policy, signature line Return policy; Text block (signature line)
VAT, GST or ABN number Business identifier
Order number Custom Liquid block with order.name (Receipt number is built in)
Order note Order note setting (sale, return and exchange receipts)
Customer name and email Customer information
Staff name Transaction staff; Staff attributed to sale
Your own QR code or link Custom scan code (footer, your label and URL)
A QR code or barcode at the top of the receipt Order code at the top, with your label (your own link goes in Custom scan code)
Product details on each line Product metafields below the line item (product descriptions can’t be added)
Hidden zero-price lines, reordered items, dividers, fonts, CSS No direct replacement (see the zero-price lines section below)

If notes were the reason you edited the template, the order notes guide covers where they print.

How do I put the order number back on a Shopify POS receipt?

The visual editor has a built-in Receipt number, but the order number, such as #1001, isn’t one of its options. To print it, add a custom Liquid block to the receipt header or footer that uses the order.name variable, then preview each receipt type.

Merchants have asked for the order number on POS receipts since 2021. A custom Liquid block supports variables including order.name (the order name, such as #1001), order.note and order.receipt_number.

Each block is capped at 50 KB and can’t use tags such as assign, capture, include or render. Custom Liquid blocks print on completed online and Point of Sale orders, not on offline checkout orders.

Can I still hide zero-price lines or change the item layout on the new receipt?

No. On the new receipt Shopify manages the transaction body (the item list), and a custom Liquid block can’t restyle or hide content elsewhere, so an edit that hid zero-price service lines, reordered items or added dividers has no direct replacement. Custom CSS, fonts and designs aren’t supported either.

One option is to give a zero-price product a clear name, so staff and customers can read the line. For more detail on an item, use Product metafields (see the table above).

What should I check before I click Activate visual editor?

Activation applies to your whole shop and can’t be undone. Before you click it, update every device to POS 11.10 or later, save a copy of your Liquid, list each edit by location, preview every receipt type and rebuild what’s flagged. Then connect each receipt printer, so you can test-print on every device as soon as you activate.

  1. Update every POS device to version 11.10 or later. Devices on earlier versions keep printing the previous receipt template, so a mixed fleet prints two different receipts.
  2. Print or photograph each receipt type you use today, including gift and gift card. Then go to Sales channels > Point of Sale, open Customize the in-store experience, click Edit for Receipts, select the Sections icon in the left sidebar, then Edit code, and copy your Liquid into a file you keep.
  3. List every edit for each location. Code editor changes apply to the selected location only, so two stores can have different templates.
  4. From the code editor, click Preview and pick each receipt type. Note what migrated and what is flagged. You can build the new receipt in the visual editor now.
  5. Rebuild each flagged item using the table above.
  6. If you customize a location on its own in the visual editor, later global edits skip that location until you reset it, and a reset can’t be undone.
  7. Preview at 80 mm (Star Micronics or Epson TM) or 57 mm (Star Micronics mPOP), whichever matches your printer.
  8. Make sure each receipt printer is connected to Shopify POS, so you can test-print as soon as you activate. If a printer won’t print, see receipt printer not printing.
  9. Click Activate visual editor in the Preview receipts setting.
  10. After you activate, print a receipt on each device and check it. To reprint a recent order in Shopify POS, tap the order icon, tap the order, tap Receipt and select the event.

After the switch to the visual editor, can I get my old POS receipt layout back?

No. Once the visual editor is active, Shopify removes the code editor and it can’t be restored. You can rebuild header and footer content, such as text, a QR link or the order number, but not the item list’s layout or styling, such as dividers you added in Liquid, because Shopify now manages the item list.

Rebuild each edit, including a missing QR code, from the table above and your saved Liquid, then test-print on every device.

Does the Shopify POS receipt code editor deadline apply to stores in Italy or France?

No. Shopify’s receipt code editor isn’t available for any POS locations in Italy or France, so the deadline to leave it doesn’t apply there. In Italy, the Epson RT printer handles all receipt content and it can’t be changed in Shopify. In France, content required for NF525 compliance can’t be customized or removed.

How do I print an item list for the back room without using the receipt?

Print the draft order or the order itself instead. Shopify manages the item list on the new receipt, and a custom Liquid block can’t hide or restyle it, so you can’t reshape a receipt into a ticket for the back room. Shopify’s own routes are printing a draft order from POS and printing an order before payment.

Don’t use a gift receipt instead: on the new template it omits line items, prices, quantities and totals (see gift receipts without prices). What a prep ticket is explains the idea.

If your Liquid template doubled as a ticket for the back room, Prep Ticket, from Countermade, does that job: staff print a price-free ticket from a draft order saved in Shopify POS, listing its items, quantities, customer and notes. It prints through the iPad’s print dialog to an AirPrint printer the iPad can reach, needs Shopify POS Pro, and works with drafts made in POS or the Shopify admin. For example, a bakery taking a custom cake order saves it as a draft in POS and prints a ticket with the items, quantities and the customer’s note.

Common questions

When does the Shopify POS receipt code editor stop working?
Shops with Liquid receipt templates have until January 1, 2027 to move to the visual editor. Any shop still on Liquid on that date is migrated to the new format automatically.
Can I switch back to the code editor after activating the visual editor?
No. Once you activate the visual editor for your store, Shopify removes the code editor and it can’t be restored.
Which POS version prints the new receipt template?
Shopify POS 11.10 or later. Update every POS device before you activate the visual editor, because devices on earlier versions keep printing the previous receipt template.
Can I still use Liquid on Shopify POS receipts?
Yes, inside custom Liquid blocks in the receipt header or footer. They can’t use CSS, can’t restyle or hide other receipt content, and can’t use tags such as assign, capture or render.
Where is the receipt code editor in the Shopify admin?
Go to Sales channels > Point of Sale, open Customize the in-store experience, click Edit for Receipts, select the Sections icon in the left sidebar, then click Edit code. It works only for POS Pro locations, from the Shopify admin on desktop, and only until you activate the visual editor or January 1, 2027.
