Shopify POS save-cart and draft order apps compared

The short answer

Since POS 11.11 (July 2026), Shopify POS Pro saves each cart automatically, and any POS device in the same store can open it for 24 hours by default. For a longer wait or another location, save a draft order, which can hold stock once you reserve it. Yagi POS Cart Helper and Leav’s Cart Manager for POS park carts; Custom & Draft Orders (in POS) and Draftable (in the admin) manage drafts.

What’s the best way to save a cart in Shopify POS: recent carts, a draft or an app?

For a same-day pause in one store, recent carts do the job. Save a draft order when the customer will be away longer, another location needs it, or you want to reserve stock. An app fits when you want saved carts in the Shopify admin, an archive of abandoned carts, or draft workflow statuses in POS; the table compares them.

Option What it saves Where you open it How long it keeps Holds stock Price (as of October 2026) Rating
Recent carts (Shopify, POS Pro) The cart, automatically Any POS device in the same store 24 hours by default; you can change it in the admin No Included in POS Pro Not applicable
Draft order in POS (Shopify, POS Pro) The cart as a draft order Any location, the Shopify admin, other Shopify channels Deleted after a year of inactivity; any edit resets it (drafts created since April 2025) Only once reserved Included in POS Pro Not applicable
Yagi POS Cart Helper Saved carts; converts to and from drafts Multiple POS devices and the Shopify admin Not stated* Not stated* US$5.00/month, 7-day free trial 5.0 (4 reviews)
Cart Manager for POS (from Leav) Saved carts, no draft orders Any POS device, synced store-wide Not stated*; archives abandoned carts Not stated* Starter free; Pro US$5.99/month or US$59.99/year, 15-day free trial No reviews yet
Custom & Draft Orders For POS Draft orders created and edited in POS Shopify POS Draft deleted after checkout Not stated* US$15.00/month, 5-day free trial 3.8 (13 reviews)
Draftable - Draft Order Helper Admin drafts with a discount-code checkout, line item properties and notes The Shopify admin (works with Checkout and Shopify Flow) Not stated* Can deduct the draft’s stock while it waits for payment Free for the first 5 actions; US$9.00/month; US$15.00/month on Shopify Plus 5.0 (38 reviews)

Can Shopify POS save, park or hold a sale without an app?

Yes, on POS Pro. Since July 27, 2026, Shopify POS saves the current cart in the background once you add an item or a customer, so the sale is held without an extra step. To serve the next customer, clear the cart. The cart you cleared stays in recent carts for staff with the Manage recent carts permission.

To reopen one, tap Cart, then the staff dropdown; recent carts vs draft orders has the steps, the delete setting and why a cart can vanish.

When should I save the cart as a draft order instead?

Save a draft order when the customer will be gone longer than a day, when another location needs the order, when you want to hold the stock, or when the customer will pay later. Each edit to a draft restarts its one-year deletion clock, which applies to drafts created since April 2025.

To save the cart as a draft, tap the horizontal menu icon on the cart, then Create draft order. When the customer comes back, tap the horizontal menu icon, then Load draft order > Load to cart, and check out.

When the customer needs more than a day, Create draft order turns the cart into a draft any location can open.

A draft holds no stock until you reserve it. Choose Reserve inventory on the draft in the Shopify admin, or Reserve items in the Shopify mobile app, and set the date the reserve ends. See how to hold an item for a customer, and for updating and deleting drafts, every draft order action in Shopify POS.

Which Shopify POS apps save carts or manage draft orders?

As of October 2026, Yagi POS Cart Helper (Yagi Software) and Cart Manager for POS (Leav) park POS carts. Custom & Draft Orders For POS runs draft orders inside POS, and Draftable, also from Yagi Software, works in the Shopify admin alongside Checkout and Shopify Flow.

For saved carts in the Shopify admin as well as POS, look at Yagi POS Cart Helper. Its saved carts open on multiple POS devices and convert to and from draft orders, and the plan adds a gift card balance tile and a quick-add tile.

Cart Manager for POS has a free Starter plan. Its POS tiles save, retrieve and archive carts, which sync store-wide in real time with no draft orders involved. Pro adds support and Shopify Flow.

For a team that creates and edits draft orders in POS all day, Custom & Draft Orders For POS, from Lazer Technologies, adds custom items and services, draft search and workflow statuses, and loads a draft into the POS cart. After checkout, the draft is deleted.

In the Shopify admin, Draftable makes a draft checkout that accepts discount codes, adds line item properties and notes, and can deduct a draft’s stock while it awaits payment.

How does the customer pay for a parked cart or draft in Shopify POS?

If the customer comes back, open the recent cart (Cart > staff dropdown) or load the draft (horizontal menu icon > Load draft order > Load to cart) and check out as usual. If they won’t be back in person, Shopify’s native route on POS Pro is Send cart, which emails a link to your online checkout for the whole order.

To send it, tap the horizontal menu icon on the cart, then Send cart, and enter the customer’s email address. The order is saved as a draft. For other native ways to take payment or print the order, see Shopify payment links explained and printing an order before the customer pays.

Saving a cart covers the wait. Two jobs often follow: payment from a customer who isn’t at the counter, and making the order. Countermade’s Shopify POS apps handle each. When the customer pays remotely, Pay Link makes a payment link from the POS cart. Once a cart is saved as a draft, Prep Ticket prints a price-free ticket for whoever makes it.

For an order staff build in Shopify POS, Pay Link makes a payment link from the POS cart for the full order total. Staff see the total up front before anything goes out, and can see whether the link has been paid. The customer pays on Shopify’s own secure checkout, so staff never see or type card details, and tapping twice won’t create a second link.

Checkout asks for a delivery address and may add shipping, and Pay Link shows staff a note when it will. Turn on local pickup at the store so the customer can choose pickup instead.

Staff see the Shopify total, excluding shipping, before the link goes out.

Prep Ticket prints a prep ticket from a draft order in Shopify POS: item names, quantities, customer and notes, with no prices. It prints through the iPad’s print dialog to a printer the iPad can reach (AirPrint), and works with drafts saved with Create draft order in Shopify POS or created in the Shopify admin.

Both need Shopify POS Pro.

Next step

Check that your POS app is on version 11.11 or later, then on a POS Pro device tap Cart and open a recent cart from the staff dropdown. Save a draft for any order that has to wait longer or travel to another location.

Pay Link and Prep Ticket aren’t on the Shopify App Store yet. Join early access and we’ll email you when each one is ready to try.

Common questions

Where did Save cart go in Shopify POS?
Shopify added draft orders to POS on February 29, 2024, and merchants report the Save cart tile went at the same time. Today you save a cart with Create draft order (POS Pro). Since POS 11.11 in July 2026, POS Pro also saves recent carts automatically for any POS device in the same store.
Do Shopify POS recent carts hold stock?
No. Only draft orders hold stock, and only after you choose Reserve inventory (Shopify admin) or Reserve items (Shopify mobile app) on the draft. Until then, the stock stays available to other customers.
Can I share a saved cart with another store location?
Not a recent cart. Shopify shares those across POS devices in the same store only. Save the cart as a draft order instead, which staff can retrieve at other locations or in the Shopify admin.
Does Shopify POS Lite save carts?
No. Recent carts and saving draft orders in POS are POS Pro features, and Shopify’s POS feature table lists Save/retrieve cart under POS Pro. For the rest, see our POS Lite vs Pro comparison.
How long do saved carts last in Shopify POS?
A recent cart is deleted after 24 hours by default, or as soon as it’s checked out. You can change that under Point of Sale settings > Register > Recent carts > Delete after. Draft orders created since April 1, 2025 are deleted after a year of inactivity (any edit resets it).
Is there a free app to save Shopify POS carts?
Yes. Cart Manager for POS has a free Starter plan as of October 2026, which saves, retrieves and archives carts across POS devices. On POS Pro, recent carts are included and save each cart automatically, with no app.
