Shopify POS "Couldn’t load checkout": how to fix it

The short answer

“Couldn’t load checkout” means POS couldn’t turn this cart into a checkout. Save the cart as a draft first (POS Pro). If every cart fails, check Shopify’s status. Otherwise work through it quickest first: restart POS and refresh store data, find a failing product and check its catalog, check price-changing apps, and re-add the staff member on a loaded draft.

What does “Couldn’t load checkout. There was an issue with the cart.” mean in Shopify POS?

Shopify POS couldn’t build a checkout from the items in this cart. Merchants have reported it since 2020, on iPhone and Android; developer-forum reports tie it to one product, an app that changes prices, or the staff member on a loaded draft. First, check whether every cart fails.

What you see Go to
Every cart fails, even with one ordinary item What to try first and whether Shopify is down
Only carts with one particular product One product
Only a draft order you loaded Saved drafts

If an app tile won’t open instead, see Shopify POS “App failed to load”.

What should I try first when Shopify POS checkout won’t load?

Keep the sale, then restart and refresh. One merchant reported that rebooting fixed it.

  1. Save the cart as a draft (menu icon > Create draft order) so you don’t have to scan it again.
  2. On iPad or iPhone, open the App Switcher, swipe up on Shopify POS to close it, then tap Shopify POS to reopen it.
  3. Tap the Connectivity icon > Shopify. Tap Refresh under Store data, then Refresh under Products and inventory.

Don’t delete and reinstall Shopify POS: Shopify says you lose the app logs support uses, and may lose saved carts and register shifts.

Why does checkout fail only when one product is in the cart?

If one product fails every time, check its catalog. Catalogs decide which products are available in each market and at what price. With retail markets (POS Pro, POS 10.3 or later), each retail location can have its own catalog. A product missing from the catalog for the market it’s sold in is one reported cause of the error.

A developer found the error hit specific products every time because they weren’t in the store’s “All Regions” catalog, and a Shopify staff member replied that it can happen when an app adds a product not available in the current region.

  1. Remove one item at a time, tapping Checkout each time, until checkout opens.
  2. Ring up the rest, and set the failing item aside until its catalog is fixed.
  3. In your Markets settings, check that product is in the catalog for this location’s market.

Could an app that changes prices or bundles items cause “Couldn’t load checkout”?

It can. On Shopify’s developer forum, a staff member asked a merchant with this error whether an app was adjusting their products’ prices, and a developer reported it on items an app added to the cart. Apps can change the price or presentation of cart items through a Shopify feature called cart transform.

To test it, remove the bundle or the item the app added, or ring up the plain product without the app’s discount. If that works, send the app’s developer the time and the product.

Why won’t a saved draft order load checkout in POS?

One report on Shopify’s developer forum found a draft with app-priced items and staff attribution failed checkout every time once loaded in POS; removing the staff member and adding them back fixed it. Since July 6, 2026 (POS 11.9), Shopify has turned automatic staff attribution on at eligible stores that hadn’t customized their attribution settings, so check this even if you never set it up.

To remove and re-add the staff member:

  1. On POS 11.9 and later, tap the line item and choose Attribute staff in the cart tray. On earlier versions, tap the item or Select all, then Add staff.
  2. Tap Remove.
  3. Add them again, then tap Checkout.

If staff can’t remove the name, Required is on for Add staff to sale in the sales attribution settings; an admin turns it off in the Shopify admin. More in Shopify POS staff attribution.

What does “Something went wrong. Clear the cart and try again.” mean, and should I reset the app?

Shopify’s troubleshooting page doesn’t cover this message; a merchant hit it adding an item on an iPad. Clear the cart and add the items again first. If it comes back as soon as you add an item, check for offline payments before you try Reset Account, which logs you out.

In that forum thread, Shopify support’s advice was: iOS Settings > Shopify POS > turn on Reset Account, force close POS, reopen it, log in and try again. Before you reset:

  1. Open the Orders tab and look for any order with a Payment pending badge. These are offline card payments that process once the device reconnects.
  2. Stay online until they process.
  3. Make sure someone can log back in. Shopify says that if POS logs out while offline, you need to log back in (and reconnect the card reader) before offline payments can process.

How do I know if Shopify POS checkout is down for everyone?

Tap the Connectivity icon, then Shopify, to see the status of Point of Sale, Admin and Checkout. Shopify Status lists the same services, with Subscribe to Updates for news of a fix. If Point of Sale or Checkout is down, there’s nothing to fix on your device.

If Shopify is up and nothing above worked, update the device’s operating system, then tap the Connectivity icon > This device > App version > Download latest update. Still failing? Tap This device > View diagnostics > Send report, then contact Shopify Support.

If checkout opens but the card is declined, see Shopify POS payment declined.

How do I keep the sale while checkout won’t load?

A draft order is a safer hold than a recent cart: only a draft can hold stock, once you reserve the items on it, and a recent cart is deleted after 24 hours by default. Staff can open a draft at any location; a recent cart opens on another POS device in the same store for staff with the Manage recent carts permission. For a draft, tap Load draft order > Load to cart. Both need POS Pro.

Create draft order is in the cart’s More actions (⋯) menu in Shopify POS.

More in recent carts vs draft orders and Shopify POS draft orders.

How can the customer pay if they have to leave?

Save the cart and let them pay by link. In the cart, tap More actions > Send cart to email them the cart, or open the saved draft in the Shopify admin and click Share > Copy link to text it yourself.

  • Send cart keeps the order as a draft until they check out, credited to the location and staff member (staff signed in with a PIN aren’t credited).
  • Copy link keeps prices locked by default. Steps: how to text a payment link.
  • The customer picks shipping at checkout, so turn on local pickup.

Both routes check out the same items, so if the cause is one product or an app, fix that first. At the counter, Send cart only emails, and Copy link means opening the draft in the Shopify admin. For errors on the link, see payment link checkout errors.

Pay Link, from Countermade (the Shopify POS apps from Invenire Studios), makes the payment link right from the POS cart, with no trip to the Shopify admin to copy one. Like any link, it checks out the same items, so clear a product or app problem first. The customer pays on Shopify’s own secure checkout, and staff never see or type card details.

Before the link goes out, Pay Link shows staff the total up front, with a note when checkout will add shipping. A double tap makes one link, not two, and staff can see whether the link has been paid. It’s an online order paid by link, for the full amount.

Pay Link needs Shopify POS Pro, and the local pickup setting above applies to its links too.

Pay Link shows the cart total and notes that shipping is added at checkout if the customer chooses delivery.

Common questions

Why does Shopify POS say “Couldn’t load checkout”?
POS couldn’t turn the cart into a checkout. Causes reported on Shopify’s forums include a product missing from the catalog for the location’s market, an app that changes prices, and staff attribution on a loaded draft. Remove items one at a time to find the one that fails, and if every cart fails, check whether Shopify is down.
What should I check before I reset Shopify POS?
Open the Orders tab and look for any order with a Payment pending badge. Those are offline card payments that process once the device reconnects, so stay online until they clear and make sure someone can log back in.
Can I save the sale while I fix the checkout error?
Yes. Save the cart as a draft order, or leave it as a recent cart, and staff can open either on another POS device in the store (both need POS Pro). Only a draft can hold stock, once you reserve the items on it, and a recent cart is deleted after 24 hours by default.
Should I delete and reinstall Shopify POS?
No. Shopify says not to, because you lose the app logs support uses and may lose saved carts and register shifts. Force close the app, refresh store data and install any update instead.
Is Shopify POS down right now?
In POS, tap the Connectivity icon, then Shopify, to see the status of Point of Sale, Admin and Checkout. Or open shopifystatus.com, which lists Point of Sale and Checkout separately and lets you subscribe to updates.
