Why did Shopify add shipping to my draft order invoice?

The short answer
A Shopify draft order’s invoice or payment link opens your online checkout, where the customer chooses delivery. If the draft has no shipping method, checkout offers your shipping rates, so a customer who planned to pick up can end up paying for delivery. Turn on Pickup in store for your location, then on the draft choose Add shipping or delivery > Pickup in store before you share the link, and checkout stays on pickup.

Why did checkout add shipping to my Shopify payment link?
The invoice link is where the customer chooses a shipping method and pays, so whatever rate they pick lands on top of the total you quoted. Checkout can’t know the customer meant to collect in store unless the draft says so.
For example, on a store whose checkout offered only an international rate, a draft without shipping added “International Shipping” at US$30.00, turning a US$2,640.95 order into US$2,670.95.
What will my customer see at checkout for each shipping setting on a draft?
Leave shipping empty on the draft and the customer chooses from your shipping rates. Set a rate, a custom rate, local delivery or pickup in store, and that method is locked: the customer can’t change it during checkout, on consumer and B2B orders alike.
| What you set on the draft | How you set it | What the customer sees at checkout |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing | Leave Add shipping or delivery untouched | Your shipping rates to choose from |
| A shipping rate or custom rate | Add shipping or delivery > a rate, or Custom | That rate, which they can’t change |
| Pickup in store or local delivery | Add shipping or delivery > Pickup in store or Local delivery | That method, which they can’t change. Pickup shows the location and your processing time |
How do I set up a payment link for in-store pickup?
Turn on pickup once for each location, then set pickup on the draft before you share its link, so checkout is locked to pickup. You need a location that fulfills online orders, and your store must use the latest checkout.
Turn on pickup for the location (once)
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
- In the Additional delivery methods section, click Pickup in store.
- Click the location.
- In Location status, turn on Let customers pick up orders directly at this location.
- In Expected pickup date, choose a processing time.
- Click Save.
Set pickup on the draft (every order)
- Go to Orders > Drafts and open the draft, or click Create order.
- Click Add shipping or delivery.
- In the Shipping and delivery options dialog, select Pickup in store, then choose the location.
- Click Share > Copy link and paste it into your own message, or use Send invoice. To text it, see how to send a payment link by text.
In the Shopify app on your phone, Shopify’s steps cover only a shipping rate or Custom rate, so set pickup from the Shopify admin in a browser.
If you deliver the order yourself, turn on Local delivery for the location under Settings > Shipping and delivery, then choose Local delivery in the same dialog. For local delivery orders paid at the counter, see local delivery orders in Shopify POS.
Does it work the same for POS drafts, Send cart and Quick Sale links?
A draft saved in POS or the Shopify app opens in the admin under Orders > Drafts, where you set pickup. POS Send cart emails a checkout link but has no step for choosing a delivery method. A Quick Sale link takes shipping: blank lets the customer pick a rate, filled in locks it.
| Link route | Shipping on the link | How to make it pickup |
|---|---|---|
| Admin draft (Share or Send invoice) | Whatever you set on the draft; with nothing set, your shipping rates | Add shipping or delivery > Pickup in store |
| Draft in the Shopify app | Whatever you set; the app’s steps cover only a rate or Custom rate | Open the same draft in the admin and set Pickup in store |
| Cart saved as a draft in POS (POS Pro) | Same as any draft; drafts can be viewed across Shopify channels | Open it in the admin under Orders > Drafts and set Pickup in store |
| POS Send cart (More actions > Send cart) | No step for a delivery method. Open the link yourself to see what checkout charges | Send a draft with pickup set instead |
| Quick Sale payment link (Shopify app, shipping since March 16, 2026) | Blank: the customer enters an address and picks a rate. Filled in: they can’t change it | To lock pickup, use a draft with Pickup in store set |
To send a pickup link from a POS cart, save the cart as a draft in POS, then set Pickup in store on it in the admin while the caller waits. If you load an admin draft with a custom shipping rate into POS, the rate is removed, so set the shipping method last, in the admin (every draft action in Shopify POS). Orders paid at the counter are covered in pickup orders in Shopify POS, and Shopify payment links explained compares what each link creates.
Why does checkout say “Your order isn’t available for pickup. Enter a shipping address”?
Checkout shows this error when your pickup location has no shipping zone, and your shipping settings may show “Not shipping from” next to the location. The zone doesn’t need any shipping rates; it just needs to exist. Shopify’s fix adds the zone without adding a rate:
- Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
- In the shipping zone for your pickup location, click Add rate > New rate.
- Click Done without adding a rate.
For other checkout errors, see why a customer can’t pay a draft order invoice.
Why does checkout say “There are no pickup locations available”?
Checkout shows pickup locations only in the customer’s own country, so this message appears when their location is set to another country. The customer can switch country with Change my location. Also check that your location fulfills online orders, has pickup turned on and, by default, has every item on the order in stock.
Why did pickup disappear when my customer paid with Apple Pay?
If a customer loses pickup with Apple Pay, ask them to pay with Shop Pay: Shopify’s Shop Pay help says customers paying with Shop Pay can choose pickup in store. Shopify says local delivery works with Shop Pay but not with other accelerated checkouts, and merchants have reported the same with pickup and Apple Pay.
How do I check the link before my customer pays?
Open the link yourself before the customer does. Shipping that Shopify calculated earlier doesn’t update when you add products later, so check again after any change. If the method or total doesn’t match your quote, fix the draft and check again.
- Open the copied link in a private browser window.
- Go to the delivery step, and enter a local address if asked.
- Check the method and total, then close the tab without paying.
To tell invoice readers in the email itself that shipping may be added, add a note to the Draft order invoice template (editing the draft order invoice email).
If the total moved for another reason, such as a price change, read why a draft order’s price changed after sending.
Is tax charged at my store or the customer’s address for a pickup order?
In the US, since August 24, 2026, Shopify Tax calculates pickup orders from the pickup location. Outside the US, and for orders that aren’t pickup, a draft is taxed from the customer’s shipping address, or their billing address if there’s none. Why a payment link charged the wrong tax covers the rest.
Which shipping workarounds should I avoid?
Avoid a custom shipping rate named “Pickup”, a workaround a merchant passed on from Shopify support, and a US$0.00 custom rate. Either one is still a shipping rate, so the order gets none of the pickup handling (location, processing time) that Pickup in store gives you. Avoid marking products as not physical: a merchant has reported it stopped tax being charged.
How can staff quote the total before a payment link goes out from Shopify POS?
Pay Link, from Countermade (the Shopify POS apps from Invenire Studios), makes the payment link from the Shopify POS cart. Before anything is sent, staff see the total up front, with a note when checkout will add shipping, so they can tell the caller the total before the link goes out.
Checkout asks the customer for a delivery address and may add shipping, so turn on Pickup in store for your location (steps above). The customer pays the full amount on Shopify’s own secure checkout, and staff never see or type card details.
Pay Link needs Shopify POS Pro. See Pay Link or native POS options compared with Pay Link.
