How to take a deposit on a Shopify order, plan by plan

The short answer

You can take a deposit without Shopify Plus if the customer pays it in the store: in Shopify POS, tap Split payment, take the deposit, then tap Mark as partially paid. Collect the rest later with Collect payment in POS, or Collect payment > Send invoice in the admin. Requiring a deposit on a draft order needs Plus; on other plans, a Quick Sale custom-amount link takes a remote deposit as a separate sale.

Can I take a deposit on Shopify without Plus?

It depends on where the customer is when they pay. In the store, Shopify’s help names no plan for taking a deposit or collecting the balance. By link, a deposit on a draft order needs Plus, and a Quick Sale link is the route on other plans. The table sets out each route.

Where the customer is Route Needs Shopify Plus? (Shopify’s help and changelog, October 2026)
In the store, paying the deposit Shopify POS: Split payment > Mark as partially paid No
In the store, paying the balance Shopify POS: open the order > Collect payment No
Remote, paying the balance after an in-store deposit Admin: open the order > Collect payment > Send invoice No
Remote, paying a deposit on a draft order Admin draft: Payment due later > + Require deposit Shopify Plus
Remote, paying in installments you record in the admin Partial payments on an order with payment terms Shopify Plus
Remote, paying for each shipment as it goes out Payment requests per fulfillment Shopify Plus
Remote, paying a deposit, store not on Plus Shopify mobile app: Quick Sale > Custom amount > Collect > Payment link (a separate sale) No

How do I take a deposit in Shopify POS with Mark as partially paid?

Ring up the order in Shopify POS as usual, split the payment and charge only the deposit. Shopify POS then saves the order as partially paid, with the balance outstanding, ready to collect later in the store or by an emailed invoice.

  1. On the Select payments screen, tap Split payment.
  2. Select the customer’s payment method.
  3. Enter the deposit amount and complete the payment.
  4. Tap Mark as partially paid.
  5. Confirm the transaction details and tap Mark as partial.
  6. Optional: add the customer’s details.
  7. Tap Done.

For example, on a US$1,250.00 order with US$250.00 down, the order is saved with US$1,000.00 still to pay.

POS can’t part-pay a checkout that contains a gift card product, so ring up any gift card as a sale of its own. In some EU countries, such as France, Italy and Spain, POS can’t mark a checkout as partially paid at all.

Why can’t I take another payment on a partially paid Shopify order?

Once you refund or exchange an item on an order paid in several payments, or edit that order, Shopify’s help says “you can’t receive additional payments on that order.” Agree on the final items and price before you take the deposit, so the order never needs an edit while a balance is still owed.

How do I collect the remaining balance on a partially paid order?

You collect the balance on the original order, either in the store through Shopify POS or by emailing the customer an invoice from the Shopify admin. In the store, the customer can pay some or all of what’s owed at each visit, by whichever payment method they choose.

In the store:

  1. Open the order from the Orders screen in Shopify POS (it shows Partially paid) and tap Collect payment.
  2. Enter the amount the customer wants to pay, pick their payment method and complete the payment.
  3. If that was the final payment, tap Done. If a balance remains, tap Mark as partially paid, then Done.

By email, from the admin:

  1. Open the order in the Shopify admin.
  2. Click Collect payment, then Send invoice.
  3. Add a message, click Review invoice, and send it.

If the invoice sits unpaid, see payment reminders for unpaid orders.

Send cart can’t do this: it only works when the customer pays for the whole order, so you can’t take a deposit in person and send the cart for the balance.

Can I take a partial payment or require a deposit on a Shopify draft order without Plus?

No. On a draft order, + Require deposit under Payment due later is Shopify Plus only, as is recording several partial payments against payment terms in the admin. Without Plus, take the deposit in Shopify POS, or, for a customer who isn’t in the store, use the Quick Sale link in the next section.

What changed in 2026:

  • February 6, 2026: Plus stores gained payment requests per fulfillment, which bill each shipment as it goes out.
  • April 2, 2026: stores on Basic, Grow and Advanced gained Shopify’s B2B (wholesale) tools, but B2B partial payments and deposits stay exclusive to Plus.
  • July 1, 2026: apps can set a deposit on a draft order through Shopify’s Admin API, on Plus stores only.

To require a deposit on Plus:

  1. In the draft’s Payment section, select Payment due later.
  2. Pick a payment term.
  3. Click + Require deposit and enter a percentage.

With per-fulfillment requests, the deposit goes toward the first request you send. If the draft will wait a long time before it’s paid, see how long Shopify keeps draft orders.

Without Plus, send the deposit as a payment link from Quick Sale in the Shopify mobile app (not Shopify POS), using a custom amount. The customer pays the deposit online, but it’s a sale of its own, not a payment on the main order, so reduce the main order’s total by the deposit yourself.

  1. In the Shopify mobile app, open the menu and tap Quick Sale.
  2. Tap Custom amount, add a Name (for example, “Deposit, Smith sofa”), enter the amount and tap Add.
  3. Tap Collect, then Payment link.
  4. Share the link by text, or copy it.
  5. Tap Done to save the sale as Payment pending. You can reopen the link later from Pending links.

Quick Sale can’t attach a customer profile before the sale, so put the customer and the main order in the Name to match them up later.

Which Shopify apps take deposits and layaway payments?

Several Shopify App Store apps add layaway and deposit tools, such as holding stock for a customer or taking deposits on pre-orders. SD - POS Deposit Manager, Layaway: Reserve & Deposit and Bevy OrderPilot work at the Shopify POS counter; Downpay works with online checkout and focuses on pre-orders.

Prices and ratings are from each app’s Shopify App Store listing, as of October 2026.

App Works with Shopify POS Approach Price (lowest plan) Rating
Downpay: Partial Pay & Deposit Not listed Deposits or pay later on pre-order products; auto-charge, collect manually or send invoices From US$29.00/month 5.0 (98 reviews)
SD - POS Deposit Manager Yes Takes deposits in POS and credits them to the customer’s store credit US$14.99/month No reviews yet
Layaway: Reserve & Deposit Yes Reserves stock from the POS cart for a customer, with an optional deposit US$17.00/month No reviews yet
Bevy OrderPilot Yes Quotes, custom orders and deposits (for quotes without an app, see quotes in Shopify POS); launched January 2026 US$60.00/month per location No reviews yet

To hold stock without an app, see how to hold an item for a customer in Shopify POS.

For a phone customer who’d rather pay everything now than leave a deposit, Pay Link, from Countermade, makes a payment link for the order staff build in the Shopify POS cart. The customer pays it on Shopify’s own secure checkout, so you’re paid in full and staff never see or type card details. If they want to spread the cost instead, see whether Shop Pay Installments or Klarna shows on a draft link.

Pay Link also:

  • shows staff the total up front, with a note when checkout will add shipping
  • shows staff whether a link has been paid
  • makes one payment link, not two, even on a double tap

Pay Link needs Shopify POS Pro. Checkout asks the customer for a delivery address and may add shipping, so turn on local pickup at your store and the customer can choose pickup instead.

Staff see the total up front.

The whole phone-order workflow walks through it step by step, and Shopify POS payment link options sets the native routes beside Pay Link.

Common questions

Which Shopify plan do I need to take a deposit?
You don’t need Shopify Plus when the customer pays the deposit in Shopify POS: Shopify’s help lists no plan limit for that, or for collecting the rest in POS or by invoice. Requiring a deposit on a draft order needs Plus. For a remote customer, send the deposit as a Quick Sale custom-amount link; it’s recorded as a separate sale.
Why is “+ Require deposit” missing on my draft order?
It’s available only on Shopify Plus, under Payment due later once you pick a payment term in the draft’s Payment section. On other plans, take the deposit in Shopify POS with Split payment and Mark as partially paid.
Can I use Send cart to collect the balance after a deposit?
No. Shopify only lets you send a cart when the customer is paying for the entire order. For the balance, open the order in the Shopify admin and use Collect payment, then Send invoice.
Does Shopify POS do layaway?
Partly. Shopify POS can take a deposit and later payments on the same order; apps such as Layaway: Reserve & Deposit add stock reservation from the POS cart (as of October 2026).
