Can a Shopify draft order offer Shop Pay Installments or Klarna

Updated · 7 min read
By Invenire Studios, makers of Countermade

The short answer

Only if your store’s checkout offers them and the order fits their rules. Shop Pay Installments needs a US, Canadian or UK store and an order inside a set range (from US$35.00 in the US, shipping and tax included); Klarna needs a supported European country and the customer’s own currency. Shopify’s help doesn’t confirm either on draft links, so open the link before you offer either.

Shopify documents a pay-later method only for its two in-store routes: Shop Pay Installments in Shopify POS (US) and Klarna through POS Pay by link (supported European countries). For draft order and Quick Sale links, Shopify’s help names no pay-later method; whether one appears depends on what your checkout offers for that order.

Route Where the customer is Pay-later methods Shopify documents Source
Draft order invoice or copied link (Share > Copy link, or Send invoice) Anywhere None listed Shopify help
Quick Sale payment link (Collect > Payment link) Anywhere None named. The customer pays with “their preferred accelerated payment method” or by credit card Shopify help
Shopify POS Pay by link (POS 10.13 or later) In the store, by QR code or link Klarna, among other local methods, in countries where Klarna is supported for Shopify Payments, in local currency Shopify changelog, Shopify help
Shop Pay Installments in Shopify POS In a US store, scanning a QR code Shop Pay Installments, US$50.00 to US$20,000.00, for US stores selling in USD on POS 8.4.0 or later Shopify help

For how each kind of link differs, see Shopify payment links explained.

Does Shop Pay Installments work on a Shopify draft order invoice?

It can only appear if your store offers Shop Pay Installments and the order fits its rules. Shopify’s help doesn’t say either way: its draft order pages never mention installments, and its installments pages never mention draft invoices or checkout links. The invoice link opens your store’s checkout, so open it and look first.

A merchant asked in 2022 why Shop Pay showed on website orders but not on an invoice from a manually created order.

Who can offer Shop Pay Installments, and on what order amounts?

Your store needs Shopify Payments and Shop Pay turned on, and a business entity in the US (or Puerto Rico), Canada or the UK, selling in that country’s currency. The order total, with discounts, shipping and taxes, must be US$35.00 to US$30,000.00 in the US, CA$35.00 to CA$30,000.00 in Canada or £50.00 to £30,000.00 in the UK.

Country Selling currency Online order range (discounts, shipping and taxes included) In Shopify POS
United States USD US$35.00 to US$30,000.00 Yes, by QR code, US$50.00 to US$20,000.00
Canada CAD CA$35.00 to CA$30,000.00 Not available
United Kingdom GBP £50.00 to £30,000.00 Not available

Shop Pay Installments can’t be used for subscription products. Stores that mainly sell business to business, or sell in a category Affirm doesn’t support, can be suspended.

What the customer is offered depends on the amount. In the US, Shopify lists these plans:

Order total (US) Plan the customer can get
US$35.00 to US$50.00 Two biweekly, interest-free payments
US$50.00 to US$999.99 Four biweekly, interest-free payments
US$150.00 to US$30,000.00 Monthly payments, which may carry interest

Where the ranges overlap, a customer may be offered more than one plan.

Whichever plan the customer gets, you’re paid in full up front, minus the fee, and the customer repays Affirm. Details are in Shopify’s Shop Pay Installments help.

Possibly, if your store offers Klarna through Shopify Payments and the customer is in a supported European country, paying in their local currency. Check the link first (steps below).

Klarna’s own draft-order instructions apply only to stores already on its separate Klarna Payments module. If you use Klarna through Shopify Payments, those steps don’t apply to you.

To turn Klarna on, go to Settings > Payments, click Manage in the Shopify Payments section, select Klarna under Payment methods, and click Save.

Why isn’t Shop Pay Installments or Klarna showing on my draft order invoice?

The checkout only offers these methods when the order total, the customer’s address and currency, your payment settings, your store and products, and the customer all fit Shopify’s rules. Work through these checks:

  1. The total is outside the range. The limits include shipping and taxes, so the checkout total can differ from the price you quoted. For example, a US$30.00 item plus US$8.00 shipping is US$38.00 and qualifies; switch it to pickup and the US$30.00 total falls below the US$35.00 minimum. See offering local pickup on a payment link.
  2. The shipping address changed the market. The invoice currency follows the market of the shipping address, and since October 31, 2025, draft checkout prices can change with it too. Klarna works only in the customer’s local currency, and Shop Pay Installments only when the checkout currency matches your store’s country.
  3. The method isn’t on. Check Shopify Payments, Shop Pay and Klarna in your payment settings.
  4. Your store or products don’t qualify. Check the store rules above, and that Klarna permits your products.
  5. There’s a subscription product in the order. That rules out Shop Pay Installments.
  6. The customer gave only a phone number. Klarna shows only to customers who check out with an email address. See sending a draft order without an email.
  7. The customer doesn’t qualify. For Shop Pay Installments, customers must meet Shopify’s eligibility requirements, including a Shop Pay account, a billing address in the US, Canada or the UK, and a purchase within your own country.

Opening the link yourself is the closest check you can make. It shows whether your checkout offers Shop Pay Installments or Klarna for an address in the customer’s country, and the final total with shipping and tax, because that total is what the order range is measured against.

  1. In the Shopify admin, go to Orders > Drafts and open the draft.
  2. Click Share, then Copy link.
  3. Open the link in a private browser window on your phone. Enter a shipping address in the customer’s country, so you see the checkout for that country, and your own email address, since a phone-only checkout hides Klarna.
  4. Look for Shop Pay Installments or Klarna, and note the total with shipping and tax.
  5. Close the checkout without paying. Then use Send invoice > Review invoice > Send invoice, or paste the link into a message (see sending a payment link by text).

Don’t mark the draft as paid while you wait. If the customer gets stuck, see why a customer can’t pay a draft invoice. Do the same check with a Quick Sale link before you share it.

What are my options if the customer is standing in the store?

In a US store selling in USD, tap Checkout in Shopify POS, choose Shop Pay Installments, and the customer scans a QR code to apply and pay on their phone. Staff need the Create and edit permission for Draft orders. Split payments, gift cards in the cart and discount codes aren’t supported; apply one custom discount instead.

In countries where Klarna is supported for Shopify Payments, Shopify POS Pay by link (POS 10.13 or later) shows a QR code the customer scans to pay with Klarna in their local currency. See Shopify POS Pay by link explained.

Is a pay-later option the same as taking a deposit?

No. With Shop Pay Installments, Shopify pays you the whole order up front, minus the fee, and the customer repays Affirm. A deposit is part of the price you collect now, with the rest due later, and setting a percentage deposit on a draft order’s payment terms is a Shopify Plus feature.

See Shopify deposits by plan, and for big-ticket phone orders, furniture store phone orders on Shopify.

For a phone order built at the counter, Pay Link, from Countermade (the Shopify POS apps from Invenire Studios), makes the payment link from the Shopify POS cart. The customer pays on Shopify’s own secure checkout, so staff never see or type card details.

Before the link goes out, Pay Link shows staff the total up front, with a note when checkout will add shipping. Turn on local pickup at your store so a customer collecting in person can choose pickup at checkout instead of shipping. Pay Link needs Shopify POS Pro.

A double tap on a busy counter still makes one link, not two. Staff can see whether it has been paid. See how Pay Link works and how the payment link options compare.

Common questions

Can I send a Shop Pay Installments link from a Shopify draft order?
Only if your store’s checkout offers it and the order fits its rules. The draft link opens your store’s checkout, and Shopify’s help doesn’t say whether installments appear there, so open the link yourself before you promise it to the customer.
What is the minimum order for Shop Pay Installments?
Online, it’s US$35.00 in the US, CA$35.00 in Canada and £50.00 in the UK, with discounts, shipping and taxes included. In a US store taking it through Shopify POS, the minimum is US$50.00.
Why doesn’t Klarna show on my customer’s checkout?
Klarna through Shopify Payments works only in supported European countries and only in the customer’s local currency. Shopify’s help also says Klarna shows only to customers who check out with an email address, not a phone number alone.
Do I get paid in full if the customer uses Shop Pay Installments?
Yes. Shopify says you receive full payment for the order up front, minus the fee, and the customer makes the remaining payments to Affirm.
Why is Shop Pay Installments not showing on my Shopify invoice?
Check the total first: with discounts, shipping and taxes it must be US$35.00 to US$30,000.00 in the US. Then check for a subscription product, that Shopify Payments and Shop Pay are on, and that the customer qualifies, which includes a Shop Pay account and a purchase within your own country.
