Shopify invoice can’t be sent: fix "Verify this email address"

The short answer

“Verify this email address” is about your store’s sender email, the From address on the emails Shopify sends customers, not your account email. Merchants who hit it report that Settings > Notifications shows the sender address needs verifying, and the invoice sends once they verify it again. If the customer is waiting, open the draft order, click Share, then Copy link, and text them the link.

What does “There is 1 error with this invoice. Invoice can’t be sent from [email]. Verify this email address and try again” mean?

The error means Shopify won’t send the invoice from your sender email until that address is verified. The sender email is the From address on your customer notifications, set under Settings > Notifications, and the draft order invoice is one of those notifications. Once the address is verified, merchants report the same draft sends.

The banner shows your own store address in place of [email]. Shopify’s help also says you need to confirm your sender email address before you can edit the body or subject of a notification.

This page is for an invoice that won’t send. If it sent but the customer never got it, see what to do when the invoice email isn’t received.

Why does Shopify say verify when my email already shows as verified?

Because two different addresses are involved. Merchants report a green “verified” tick under Manage account and still get the error. Shopify keeps a store email, the address it uses to contact you about your account, and a separate sender email under Settings > Notifications, the From address on customer notifications (Shopify’s definitions). Only the sender email matters here.

Address What it is What it does here
Store email The address you signed up with Shopify uses it to contact you about your account. It isn’t the address the invoice comes from
Sender email Set under Settings > Notifications The From address on customer notifications, including order confirmations and the draft order invoice

One Shopify Community thread describes the same thing: a green “verified” tick on the account, order cancellation emails still going out, and invoices failing.

How do I re-verify my Shopify sender email?

The setting is in the Shopify admin under Settings > Notifications, in the Sender email section, and merchants report the invoice sends once they verify that address again. Do this on a computer if you can, where one merchant reports the resend button appears.

  1. In the Shopify admin, go to Settings > Notifications.
  2. Find the Sender email section.
  3. If it says the address needs verifying, resend the verification.
  4. Open the verification email at that address and click the link.
  5. Go back to Orders > Drafts, open the draft, click Send invoice, then Review invoice, and send it.

That’s the fix relayed from Shopify Support in this Community thread, and others in the thread confirm it worked for them.

You need someone who can open Settings, usually the store owner. To use a different address, enter it in the Sender email section, click Save, then verify it if Shopify asks you to. Shopify advises against “no-reply” style addresses. If your sender is a forwarding address on a Shopify-managed domain, it stops working when the domain is canceled or expires.

Once the sender address is confirmed, you can also edit the invoice email to suit phone orders.

How do I get the customer paid while the Shopify invoice won’t send?

Share the draft’s checkout link yourself, in your own text or chat message. Copy link sends nothing from Shopify, so the sender address doesn’t come into it. Shopify lists sharing the link as one of two ways to get a draft’s checkout link to a customer, alongside the invoice email.

On a computer:

  1. Go to Orders > Drafts and open the draft.
  2. Click Share.
  3. Click Copy link.
  4. Paste the link into your own message and send it to the customer.

In the Shopify app on your phone:

  1. Tap the Menu icon.
  2. In the Orders menu, tap the arrow down icon, then tap Draft orders, and open the draft.
  3. Tap the Horizontal menu or Vertical menu, then tap Share.
  4. Tap Copy link.

If the draft was saved in Shopify POS, it’s in the same list: Shopify says draft orders can be viewed across channels. More on drafts in Shopify POS.

For the full routine, see how to text a checkout link. Checkout may add shipping, so if the customer is collecting, stop checkout adding shipping before you send.

If you’re starting from scratch on your phone, a Quick Sale payment link works too (Collect, then Payment link, then Copy link); see Shopify’s kinds of payment link.

What if the Shopify sender verification email never arrives?

Check the spam folder at the sender address, and whether other Shopify emails reach that inbox. If nothing arrives, change the sender to a different address you control in Settings > Notifications, then verify it if Shopify asks you to. If the error still won’t clear, contact Shopify Support.

Merchants have reported resending the verification and never receiving it; the one suggestion in that thread was to check whether other Shopify emails arrive.

Is a paused Shopify plan stopping the invoice from sending?

No. Shopify’s help says a store on the Pause and Build plan can still send draft order invoices; the customer just can’t complete checkout. So a paused plan doesn’t stop the invoice sending. If your store is paused, see what to check when your store can’t accept payments.

Pay Link, from Countermade (the Shopify POS apps from Invenire Studios), is built for counters that build orders in Shopify POS. If your phone orders start there, staff build the order in the POS cart and Pay Link turns it into a payment link for a customer who isn’t at the counter. Before the link goes out, staff see the total up front, with a note when checkout will add shipping.

The customer pays on Shopify’s own secure checkout, and staff never see or type card details. A double tap makes one payment link, not two, and staff can see whether the link has been paid.

Pay Link shows the cart total and notes that shipping is added at checkout if the customer chooses delivery.

Pay Link needs Shopify POS Pro. It takes full payment.

Common questions

Which email does Shopify mean by “Verify this email address”?
Your sender email: the From address on customer notifications, set under Settings > Notifications. It’s separate from your store email, the address Shopify uses to contact you about your account, so a green verified tick on your account doesn’t clear the error.
Can I send the customer the checkout link while the invoice is blocked?
Yes. Open the draft order, click Share, then Copy link, and send the link in a text or chat message. No Shopify email is involved.
Will clearing my browser cache or using another device fix the invoice error?
Merchants report the same error on every browser and device, and one said the generic fixes suggested, such as clearing the cache, didn’t help. What cleared it was verifying the sender email again in Settings > Notifications.
What if re-verifying my sender email doesn’t clear the error?
Check that the verification email reached the sender inbox, including spam, or change to a different sender address you control and verify it if Shopify asks you to. If the invoice still won’t send, contact Shopify Support.
