What does a customer get after paying a Shopify payment link?

The short answer

Yes: Shopify sends an order confirmation, and that is the customer’s receipt. Once the customer pays, the draft becomes a paid order and the confirmation goes by email, or as a single text if they checked out with only a phone number. The invoice they got first was only the request to pay. To send it again, click Resend email in the order’s Timeline, or print or send a receipt from Shopify POS.

Does Shopify send a receipt when a customer pays a draft order invoice?

Yes. When the customer completes checkout, the draft becomes an order marked Paid, and Shopify sends the Order confirmation notification. That email or text is the customer’s record of the payment, with the order number.

The customer may see up to four things. For a link payment, the order confirmation is the receipt.

What the customer gets When What it’s for
Invoice email (or the link you sent) Before paying The request to pay, with a link to checkout
Order confirmation (email, or one SMS) After paying The receipt for an online payment, with the order number
Order status page At the end of checkout, and can be linked from the confirmation Order details and shipping updates
POS receipt Only if staff print or send one A receipt from the Shopify POS Orders screen

Draft links, Send cart and Mark as paid all end with an order confirmation, because each one creates a paid order. For a Quick Sale link, staff send an email or SMS receipt from the Order summary in the Shopify app once it’s paid. Only Quick Sale is resent from somewhere else.

How the customer paid What they get Where staff resend it
Draft order link from the admin or Shopify app Order confirmation Order Timeline > Resend email
Draft saved in Shopify POS, then paid by link Order confirmation Order Timeline > Resend email
POS Send cart (an order is created when they pay) Order confirmation Order Timeline > Resend email
Quick Sale payment link An email or SMS receipt that staff send from the Order summary Quick Sale > More actions > Transactions > Paid > the sale
Mark as paid on a draft Order confirmation email Order Timeline > Resend email

Mark as paid sends the confirmation when you create the order, so only use it once the money is in. For what each kind of link is, read Shopify payment links explained.

How do I resend a Shopify order confirmation to a customer?

Open the paid order in your Shopify admin and use Resend email under the order confirmation in the order’s Timeline. You can send it to the customer or to yourself, so you get a copy of exactly what they received.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Orders.
  2. Click the order.
  3. In the Timeline section, click Resend email under the order confirmation.
  4. Choose to send it to the customer, or to yourself for a copy.
  5. Click Send.

Check the address in the order’s Contact section before you click Send. If it’s wrong or missing, click Edit in that section to add the right one. If there’s no order confirmation in the Timeline, see the next section. If the resent email still doesn’t arrive, work through why a Shopify invoice email wasn’t received.

Why is there no Resend email option on a Shopify order?

Resend email appears only under an email already in the order’s Timeline. If there’s no order confirmation there, either the customer hasn’t paid yet and it’s still a draft, or the draft had no email address or phone number when it was completed. Without contact information, Shopify doesn’t send the confirmation and can’t send it after the draft order is created.

Merchants have asked how to resend a confirmation that was never sent. The practical fix is to send the order status page link or a printed invoice, both covered below.

To prevent it, add the customer’s email or phone number to the draft before you share the link. For customers who don’t use email, see how to create a draft order with no email. To let them check out with a phone number, go to Settings > Checkout, choose Phone number or email under Customer contact method, and save.

How do I send the customer their order status page?

Open the order, click More actions, then View order status page. You land on the same page the customer sees. Copy the address from your browser and send it to the customer, with the order number and the email or phone number they checked out with, because after a few weeks Shopify may ask for them before showing the full details.

  1. Go to Orders, search for the order and click it.
  2. Click More actions > View order status page.
  3. Copy the URL from your browser and send it to the customer.

After that window, a customer who isn’t logged in sees only limited details: the items, the total, any discounts and the status. A Log in to view all order details prompt asks them to log in, or to enter their order number and the email or phone number they used at checkout.

Shopify POS can reprint or send a receipt for any order, and online orders appear on its Orders screen alongside in-store orders. Filter by Sale type: Online to find a link-paid order, open it, tap Receipt, pick the event, then choose the receipt option to print or send it.

  1. In Shopify POS, tap the Order icon.
  2. Filter by Sale type: Online if you need to.
  3. Tap the order, then tap Receipt.
  4. Select the event, then the receipt option to print or send it.

The Email receipt and Text buttons appear on the Payment successful screen, right after you take payment in Shopify POS. For an order paid by link, use Receipt as above.

Install Shopify Order Printer, an app from Shopify (free as of October 2026) that prints invoices, packing slips and other documents. Open the order, choose Print with Order Printer and print the invoice, then save it as a PDF from the print dialog and attach it to your reply.

  1. Go to Orders and click the order.
  2. Click More actions, then Print with Order Printer.
  3. In the Document section, select the invoice.
  4. Click Print documents, then save as PDF from the print dialog.

If you need formal invoices on every order, compare the options in Shopify payment link vs an invoice app.

What should staff say when a caller asks for their receipt?

Find the order first, then tell the caller which email or text is their receipt, where Shopify sent it, and resend it if needed. If you can only find a draft, the payment hasn’t gone through, so don’t send anything and don’t mark it paid.

  1. Find the order. Search by the customer’s name, and see which number to quote the caller. If it’s still a draft, the payment hasn’t gone through. Knowing when a payment link has been paid covers how to check.
  2. Name the receipt. Check the address in the order’s Contact section, then tell them. For example: “Shopify emailed your order confirmation to [their email address] when you paid. That’s your receipt, and it has your order number.” If they checked out with a phone number, say it was texted to [their phone number] instead.
  3. Send it again. Resend the confirmation, send the order status page link, or print or send a receipt from POS.
  4. If they say they paid but there’s only a draft, don’t mark it paid. Ask them to check with their bank. Merchants have reported this case, and payment errors on a payment link covers failed card payments.

Use Pay Link, from Countermade (the Shopify POS apps from Invenire Studios). It starts from the POS cart and shows staff the total up front, with a note when checkout will add shipping. Turn on local pickup at the store so customers can choose pickup instead. A double tap makes one payment link, not two. Staff can see whether a link has been paid before they call the customer back.

Pay Link shows the cart total and notes that shipping is added at checkout if the customer chooses delivery.

The customer pays on Shopify’s own secure checkout, and staff never see or type card details. Pay Link needs Shopify POS Pro and takes full payment.

Common questions

Is a Shopify invoice the same as a receipt?
No. The draft order invoice is the request to pay, with a link to the checkout page. Once the customer pays, Shopify sends the order confirmation, and that is their record of what they paid.
Does marking a draft order as paid email the customer?
Yes. When you use Mark as paid and create the order, Shopify emails the customer an order confirmation. Only mark a draft paid once the money has actually arrived.
Will the customer get a text instead of an email?
Only if they check out with a phone number and there’s no email address on the customer. Shopify then sends a single order confirmation by SMS, if your business address is in a country Shopify supports for SMS. If the customer has an email address, the email goes instead.
Can I resend a confirmation that was never sent?
No. If the draft had no email or phone number when it was completed, Shopify sends no order confirmation and can’t send it later. Send the customer their order status page link or a printed invoice instead.
Can Shopify POS print a receipt for an online order?
Yes. Online orders appear on the POS Orders screen. Filter by Sale type: Online, open the order, tap Receipt and choose the receipt option to print or send it.
